Former LAC student, Samuel León Sáez (MPhil 2017–2019), has published his research “Mexico's Fuel Trafficking Phenomenon: Analysing an Emerging Black Market” as part of Palgrave Macmillan’s St Antony’s Series. The book analyses how fuel theft and trafficking has become a significant black market for Mexico´s diverse criminal actors in recent years. Along the way, this comprehensive research shines a light on the workings of a black market that has been found to operate across the world, including North and South America, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East and North Africa; and offers a research framework that can help examine other fuel trafficking criminal markets in different national and regional contexts. This research will prove of relevance for readers interested in energy and security, illicit markets, criminality, modern-day Mexico, and the challenges posed by the country´s security crisis. At a wider level, this work contributes with insights on the diversification and sophistication of criminality and black markets in Mexico, Latin America, and the world.
